TATKAL TICKETS - HOW TO AVOID?

AVOID TATKAL BOOKINGS

1) GO FOR GENERAL QUOTA:

Tickets to your destination will be waitlisted. However, the next major station may fall under General quota.

Example, in Nellai express your Madurai quota will be waitlisted but tickets will be available upto Kovilpatti. You can alaways book upto Kovilpatti and get down at Madurai. You pay Rs.20 extra per passenger, but this is still a very nominal sum as compared to tatkal charges.               

In return cases, you can book tickets in general quota source station and select the boarding point at your chosen station. For example, in Mannai Exp, book from Nidamangalam to Chennai and choose boarding station as Kumbakonam.

Not only on these trains, but all trains have general quota stations. If you need to go to Pune from Chennai, choose Kalyan junction instead of Pune. Your tickets will be at General quota instead of Pooled quota.

2) SELECT WEEKLY TRAINS:

Most commoners are not aware of weekly trains. So these trains do not get filled up as fast as a regular train.

For example, Pandian Exp is filled up faster than Madurai Exp (via Thanjavur). So go for these weekly trains by listing the available trains on your travel date:

SAVE ON TRAIN TICKETS

SAVE ON RAILWAY FARES

With ever increasing fares of train tickets, we need to follow few rules to reduce the cost of train travel.

1) USE THE PRS:

Internet ticket booking has turned costly. Rs.23 service charge + Rs.8 for your bank services, you end up paying Rs.30 extra per ticket.

If you are 100% sure of a travel plan, use the nearest Reservation counter to book the tickets. Most counters are free except 10am to 12 noon (Tatkal booking) and you can book the tickets without sparing Rs.30 extra.

2)REDUCE CANCELLATION CHARGES:

Cancellation charges can be reduced, if not avoided completely. Book the tickets when it reaches RAC50. This way, when you want to cancel – the chart would have moved up to RAC10 and you end up losing Rs.30 instead of Rs.60 (on a confirmed ticket).

If you plan to travel also, its not a problem as RAC50 will be definitely cleared to confirmation. This is a small risk you take for reducing the cancellation charges to half.

3)USE SHORT DISTANCE TRAIN:

Some trains take a circuitous route for reaching a destination. Always list down trains (from Indian railways website) and choose the shortest distance.

4) SELECT NON-SUPERFAST TRAINS:

Select non-superfast trains to a destination and save Rs.30 per passenger. Few trains are:

Use website to list down trains. There may be special weekly trains that may be non-superfast. Book accordingly.

5) AVOID TATKAL BOOKINGS:

Tatkal bookings are frustrating and are 50% to 60% higher than regular fares. Also

-         no refund on cancellation (what if you are caught in a traffic jam)

-         no senior citizen concession

-         fares calculated till the final destination and not your destination

WEEKLY EXPRESSES

Indian Railways has a fad called weekly expresses.

There is a weekly train between
Pondy = Delhi
Rameswaram - Coimbatore
Pondy - Kanyakumari
Chennai-Manamadurai
Mumbai-Kanyakumari
Tiruchy - Thanjavur Passenger (????) on Saturdays only
Pondy-Howrah
Rameswaram-Okha (where is it)
Madurai-Dehradun
and list is endless

Problem is - we can search through internet.
What about the common man? The unreserved compartments are not filled
in many of these trains due to poor awareness among the poor.

Instead of 7 weekly trains why not launch a single daily train?
But who cares about common man?

GOOD BYE ROCKFORT EXPRESS

                                    GOOD-BYE, MALAIKOTTAI (ROCKFORT) EXPRESS

Rockfort Express travels to Thanjavur, on its last journey today – after serving for nearly 15 years, from 1998. There is an interesting story behind Rockfort Express being extended to Thanjavur.

1996

Mr.Jafer Sherif, then the Railway minister wanted to visit Nagore from Bangalore. The officials politely told that there was no train from Bangalore to Nagore , as the Tiruchy-Thanjavur-Thiruvarur-Nagore section was under metre gauge.

Mr.Sherif orders for gauge conversion of this 150 km stretch.

1998

A parallel broad gauge line was laid to the existing metre gauge line of Tiruchy-Thanjavur section.

By this time, the coaliation government came down, and so Mr.Sherif's pet project was shelved.

Not knowing what to do with this 55 km long broad gauge line, Southern Railways extended Rockfort Express from Tiruchy to Thanjavur.

Thanjavur already had 5 metre gauge trains and Rockfort Express (which had a circuitous route and costed more) was a superflouus train, then.

2003

BJP government started Thanjavur-Kumbakonam gauge conversion for Mahamaham festival.

All projects were communal, isn't that funny?

Southern Railways cancelled all the 5 trains to Thanjavur (Cholan, Sethu, Boatmail, Sengottai Passenger & Thanjavur Passenger) and suddenly Rockfort Express became the lifeline for Thanjavur.

2011

Southern Railway successfully completes the Tiruchy-Nagore broad gauge conversion. 15 years to complete 150 kms – which is around 10km gauge conversion per year.

The gauge conversion perhaps involved some cryogenic technology, hee hee?

But alas, poor Sherif! His plans to have a Bangalore-Nagore train was spoiled by the BJP – as the train was already extended to Kumbakonam-Mayiladuthurai. Now its Mayiladuthurai – Mysore express and you have to board a passenger train from Thanjavur Junction to reach Nagore.

2013

After 10 years, Southern Railways re-launches some of its old trains in Thanjavur section.

Cholan Express – Its runs as Chennai Express, as North Indian Officials do not want to name it after a Tamil King.

Sethu Express – Its runs through Virudhachalam as Rameswaram Express (again hatred towards Tamil names by the Railway officials)

Boat Mail – This runs through Thanjavur as Rameswaram Express (Many gullible passengers confuse both the Rameswaram Expresses)

Thanjavur Passenger – In tune with its policy of charging South Indian passengers more, Railways have launched the erstwhile Thanjavur Passenger as Thanjavur Express from 1^st September.

But beware, this train starts from Chennai at 11.30 pm. Maintenance staff finish their work at midnight and this train will start only at 00.30 (post midnight) from the originating station (Ezhumbur/Egmore).So, not a good train to choose, if you plan a travel with your kids & stuff.

Again, in return this train starts at 8.30 pm at Thanjavur and reaches Chennai by 4 am. You may have to spend an hour at station before you get your first bus or hire an auto for twice the cost of the ticket fare from Thanjavur.

All Chennai Expresses?

Beware! The Railways have foolishly named all the trains as Chennai Express in the return direction and be careful to choose the correct train.

If you are at Mayiladuthurai station then you may have to choose between all the Chennai Expresses correctly. Train nos 6854 (from Trichy) ,6102 (from Rameswaram),6176 (from Karaikal) ,2624(from Madurai), 6184 (from Thanjavur) and 6186 (from Velankanni) are all named as CHENNAI EXPRESS – and so go by the time or the train number if you want to be safe.

But for Baalu.........

Thankfully Mr.T.R.Balu has named all the new trains he had introduced to his hometown, Mannargudi with Tamil names.

Chennai-Mannargudi train as MANNAI EXPRESS (otherwise, one more Chennai Express will be added to the long list- passengers at intermediate stations will become mad).

Tirupaty-Mannargudi train as PAAMANI EXPRESS and Coimbatore-Mannargudi train as     CHEM MOZHI EXPRESS.

So who will step in the rename the Chennai Expresses as CHOLAN EXPRESS, THANJAI EXPRESS  and BOAT MAIL?

Welcome back Thanjavur Passenger

Anyway, something is better than nothing. Welcome back – Thanjavur Passenger (with Express fares, and also Tatkal fares).

Railways must consider providing a train to passengers of Tiruverumbur after short-terminating Rockfort Express at Tiruchy. Maybe, Boat Mail can stop over at this station. It used to do so, during the metre gauge days.

பிரம்மாண்டமான ‘சிந்தாமணி’ ஓட்டலில் லீனா நுழைய, வரவேற்பு பெண்ணிடம் பரபரப்பு தொற்றிக் கொண்டது. லீனாவை விட அதிக உதட்டுச்சாயம் பூசி ‘வாய்- மையே வெல்லும்’ என உணர்த்தினாள்.

“யெஸ்……என்ன உதவி வேணும்” – கொஞ்சலாய் கேட்டாள் வரவேற்பு பெண்.

“மிஸ்டர் சுமந்த் சாட்டே…… ‘கஹானி’ பத்திரிக்கை நிருபரை மீட் பண்ணனும்”

“தாங்க்ஸ்” – என்றபடி லீனா ஒயிலாய் சுழன்று, அன்ன நடை போட்டு நடப்பதை லாபியில் இருந்த 48 கண்களில், 46 கண்கள் ரசித்தன. பொறாமையுடன் பார்த்தன வரவேற்பு பெண்ணின் 2 கண்கள்.

303-ஐ நெருங்கி லீனா பஸ்ஸரை அழுத்தினாள்……வழுக்கை தலையும், அரைக்கை பனியனுமாக சுமந்த் சாட்டே வெளிப்பட்டான்; லீனாவைப் பார்த்து பற்களை வெளிப்படுத்தினான் “யெஸ் பேபி” என வழிந்தான்.

“சார்….ஐ ஆம் டமில் ஆக்ட்ரெஸ் லீனா. உங்க பத்திரிக்கையில் என் பேட்டி வந்தால்  பாலிவுட்ல ஒரு சான்ஸ் அடிக்குமே” என படபடத்தாள்.

“ஓ….யெஸ்…..ஷ்யூர்” சுமந்த் தடுமாறினான்.

உரிமையாக உள்ளே வந்தாள் லீனா. சோபாவில் சாய்ந்து அமர்ந்ததே ஒரு புதுப்பட போஸ் போல் இருந்தது ”வாவ்…ரூம் ரொம்ப அற்புதமா இருக்கு”

”நீங்க வந்ததும் இன்னும் அழகு கூடிடுச்சு” 

”அய்யோடா …. ரொம்ப புகழறீங்க” லீனா குலுங்கிச் சிரித்து களேபரம் செய்தாள்.

”இதுல என்ன தவறு? நீங்க உண்மையில் அழகுதான். இந்தி நடிகைகள் எல்லாம் வெறும் மேக்கப் அழகிகள்” என்ற அவன் “மிஸ் நம்ம பேட்டிக்கு வசதியா சில ஸ்டில்ஸ் எடுக்கணும்” என அடி போட்டான்.

” ஓ………தாராளமாக” லீனா ‘தாராளமாக’ என அழுத்திச் சொன்னாள். “வந்த விருந்தினருக்கு சாப்பிட ஏதும் இல்லையா” அவளது பெரிய விழிகள் மேலும் விரிந்தன.

“இதோ… டீ & பிஸ்கட்ஸ். தனி ஒரு நடிகைக்கு உணவு இல்லை எனில் ஜகத்தினை அழித்திடுவோம்” அவன் பரபரத்தான்.

டீக்கோப்பை, பிஸ்க்கட் தட்டுடன் அவன் லீனாவின் அருகில் வர, தட்டை வாங்க முயன்ற லீனாவின் பட்டுக் கைபட்டு, தட்டு தட்டுத்தடுமாறி தரையில் கவிழ்ந்தது.

“ஓ…சாரி…” என சாரி சரிய லீனா எழுந்தாள். சுமந்த் தடுமாறி “ரூ….ம் பா…யை கூ…ப்…பி..ட..வா?” என குழறினான்.

லீனா தலை குனிந்தபடி நின்றாள். ”ப்ளீஸ்….. ரூம் பாய் வேணாம். ஒரு வாளி தண்ணீர் கொடுங்க. நானே க்ளீன் பண்றேன்”

லீனாவிடமிருந்து பார்வை விலக்காமல் அவன் பாத்ரூம் உள்ளே சென்றான். உள்ளே பக்கெட்டில் தண்ணீர் நிரப்பும் சத்தம்.

லீனா அவனை தொடர்ந்து சென்று பாத்ரூம் கதவருகே கை வைத்து ஒய்யாரமாய் நின்றாள். “சூப்பர் போஸ்” சுமந்த் தண்ணீர் பிடித்தபடி தன்னிலை மறந்தான்.

லீனா சட்டென பாத்ரூம் கதவை இழுத்து  மூடினாள். பிறகு தன் இடுப்பு சேலையை இழுத்து  மூடினாள். பாத்ரூம் வெளித் தாழ்ப்பாள் போட்டு நின்றாள்.

“லீனா… ஏன் கதவை பூட்டுரே” உள்ளே அவன் அலற-

”வெளிக் கீ இருந்தா தப்பிச்சுக்கோடா பயலே” – என்றாள்.

இடையில், இடைவெளியில் லீனாவின் இடையில் மயங்கிய மடையன் கடைசியாய்த் தெளிந்தான்.

“உனக்கு என்ன வேணும்” என்றான்.

“அப்படி வா வழிக்கு, காலையில் அமைச்சர் வேலவனை பேட்டி கண்ட பேடி, எங்கேடா அந்த சி.டி?” லீனா குரலில் கடுமை.

“டீப்பாய் மேலேதான் இருக்கு. என்னை திறந்து விடு” என ‘என்னை மறந்து விடு’ சொல்லும் ஏழை ஹீரோவைப் போல சுமந்த் புலம்பினான்.

விருட்டென டீப்பாய் மேல் இருந்த சி.டியை கைக்குள் எடுத்து ரவிக்கைக்குள்  வைத்தாள். நக்கலாய் பாட்டுப் படித்தாள் --

“நான் ஒரு சிந்து…………..கக்கூசுல பூந்து, குழாயத் தொறந்து வுட்டேன்.

வாளி இருந்தும், சொம்பு இருந்தும், தண்ணி எதுவுமில்ல…. அடக் கழுவ முடியவில்ல”

என ‘சிந்து பைரவி’ ராகத்தில் லீனா பாடி, சில விருது பெற்ற கலைஞர்களின் கண்ணீர் சிந்துவதற்கு காரணமானாள்.

“ஹே……ஹே…..” என சுமந்த் கதவை தட்டிக் கொண்டிருக்க “ராம்…..ராம்” என லீனா பழிப்புக் காட்டிவிட்டு, ரூமை விட்டு வெளியேறி, ஹோட்டலின் பின்பக்க வழியாக நடக்க தொடங்கினாள்..

மின்னல் போல, ஜெனரேட்டர் ரூம் நுழைந்த லீனாவின் உடல் மீது– ஜெனரேட்டரின் காற்று மோத லீனாவின் உடை அவள் உடலுடன் ஒட்டி ரூமின் வெப்பம் கூடியது. காவலாள் வைத்த சல்யூட்டை சட்டை செய்யாமல் வெளியேறினாள்.

தடதடவென பின் வாசல் வந்த லீனா, தயாராக நின்ற ‘மருதம்’ காருக்குள் தன்னைச் சொருக – கார் காரிகையோடு பறந்தது.

கூகுள் போட்டு தேடினாலும் கிடைக்காதபடி பதுக்கியிருந்த சிடி-யை பதுமை பதூசாய் எடுத்தாள்.

லேப்-டாப்பை எடுத்து சிடி-யை சொருகி ‘லப்-டப்’போடு திரையை நோக்கினாள் லீனா. கன்னிப்பொறிக்கு கணிப்பொறி கட்டுப்பட்டு திரை திறந்தது. அமைச்சர் வேலவன் திரையில் தோன்றினார்
